St Piran’s Day
You may not know this but 5th March is St Piran’s Day; St Piran is the Patron Saint of Cornwall. It’s Cornwall’s equivalent to Ireland’s St Patrick’s day and you don’t have to be Cornish to take part! To celebrate, parades, musicians and dancers will be taking to the streets in a sea of black, with a white cross. Celebrations will take place from Saturday 2nd – Tuesday 5th March and there’s plenty of local events going on, perfect for the whole family, including pasty making competitions, scone tastings and beer festivals. To find out what celebrations will be taking place throughout the county, please keep an eye on the Visit Cornwall website, as it will be updated as they get new details of individual events.
World Pasty Championships
If you love pasties then don’t miss the grand finale of the World Pasty Championships, held at the Eden Project on Saturday 2nd March, just an hour away from our holiday cottages in Cornwall. This is the Olympics of the oggy (pasty), that will see competitors from across the globe competing to make what they hope is the world’s best pasty! There will be a great selection of choice, from the old traditional style Cornish pasty, as well as some more unusual varieties. The championships are held for both amateur and professional bakers and there are plenty of opportunities to taste and buy your pasties, to remember the occasion. Entry to the competition is free, with admission to the Eden Project, which in itself is a fantastic family day out!
Cornwall Garden Society (CGS) Spring Flower Show
The beginning of April (Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th) sees the CGS Spring Flower Show move to its new venue. You can expect a full abundance of colour and scents at the Royal Cornwall Showground at Wadebridge, just a 45 minute drive from our holiday cottages in Cornwall. It’s the perfect opportunity to get into the gardening mood for spring and to get some great ideas for your garden, whether you are a keen gardener or are just starting out. If you fancy indulging in a bit of garden-related retail therapy, there will be over 60 prestigious nurseries selling fabulous plants and bulbs and another 50 plus retailers selling garden-related goodies. This event has a focus on families, offering a range of activities designed to nurture an interest in gardening, wildlife and the natural world. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also an artisan marquee, live music and tasty food offerings to keep you and the family entertained throughout the day.
Music festivals
As we head into May, we will see venues all over Cornwall hosting a variety of different musical festivals, from chart topping artists such as Florence + the Machine, Dizee Rascal, Jorja Smith and Plan B appearing at Boardmasters, (Wednesday 7th – Sunday 11th), to local folk singers at the Bude Folk Festival towards the end of the month (Friday 24th – Monday 27th). Both festivals are within easy driving distance from our holiday cottages in Cornwall, meaning you can enjoy the festival atmosphere, before coming back to relax in your luxury family cottage.
Bridgerule’s Beer Festival at Glebe House Cottages
While we are on the topic of festivals, this may not be taking place in the spring, but make sure you keep a note in your diary for Bridgerule’s 2nd Beer Festival, hosted at our holiday cottages in Cornwall. After a great turnout to our first festival last year and the fantastic feedback we received, we have decided to host our 2nd beer festival this July! The three day event will take place between Friday 12th – Sunday 15th July. We can promise great bands, tasty food and drink and a great family friendly atmosphere.
